Couple weeks ago there was a lot of talk about a 500GB HD coming out that would fit into MB's, any updates or new news? Or any information at all? Thanks! :apple:

still think the largest size your going to get right now is 320gb. be patient i would think that by summer we might see 500gb hdd for mb's(just keep your fingers crossed)

There was someone that posted a link to a "how-to" for a 12 cm 500G hard drive in a MBP. I looked at it and wasn't impressed, mainly because it involved installing the drive without brackets. They just used pieces of foam to hold it in place.

Not a good idea, IMHO.

Try a 320G - the increase in space is amazing.

The MB (or the mini for that matter) is only limited by the technology advances in 2.5" HDDs. If it's 2.5" SATA1 (1.5 MBps), then it will work. Even if Apple isn't offering the largest 2.5" out there, you can always throw one in yourself.

Thanks MacDann. Yeah, I'm probably going to go with the 320GB, I just remember people talking about the 500GB, and figured if it was gonna be out any time soon I would wait. I don't really need that much space anyways so whatever. Thanks again.

Height is limited to 9.5mm without hacks (as described above). Hitachi's 500 gig 2.5" drive is 12mm high and won't fit in MB/MBP, and I suspect not in a Mini, either, but haven't looked that close at it.

I'm buying the 500 gig drive when it's released to put in my MacBook Pro... I've been holding off for awhile now but only have <10 GBs of space left!

I am not sure about others, but I have had terrible experience with Samsung drives failing on me to the point I won't purchase another for quite a while.

THAT, I didn't know. Thanks for the heads up, as I will be upgrading a new mini (when the new one's come out of course) and wouldn't want to get the wrong size.

i didnt know THAT too. Always thought it it would accept any 2.5" SATA1 hdd. That's really useful when i go out shopping for a new hdd to replace the current Toshiba 60GB one in my Macbook. ;)

I am seeing that after 3 revisions of the macbook, it will then goto the 320gb era, then the 400 gb era, and then 500gb. One step at a time. And it would have to be cheap, so they are likely to go into the MBP's first.

Samsung's hdd quality has been improving quite a fair bit recently, and its still much more competitively priced compared to some of the major brands in the market.

i would get a Samsung hdd for my Mac when my Toshiba one fails. I have used Samsung hdds for external storage, 3.5" Samsung hdds for my DIY PCs... no problems with them at all.
