is there any reason an express cant support a hdd? i mean is it something that could be update in a software update? or is it a hardware thing?
cheers!

No, the AE can support an external hdd now... read the front page.

Can you show us where on the front page Airport Express handles HDD's?

I'm looking and all I see is Airport Extreme.

To the OP, this was discussed in the article from the front page and on the Wi-Fi page on apple.com that AE still is only used for wireless printing. Might be a hardware restriction for the small device as to why it can't support HDD's who knows.

Would be sweet if it did.

ok people, the airport express really does not support a HDD. i have it all update and sat next to me with a hdd plugged in and nothing. even on the airport utility menu it has 'disks' grayed out. i have got the new 'n' one and applied all updates. firm ware is at 3.1

I think that it is only the new AE (w/ Wireless N). Is this what you have?

Well I stand corrected then. But didn't you read the same thing in that article that I posted above? It sure sounds to me that the AE is supported....

Nope, just says the 3 devices were updated with firmware, bug fixes, but didn't specify they all supported HDD.

i was chatting to a apple support guy just now and the new, fully updated airport express does not support a hdd, updates where bug fix.

Nice, problem solved then.... But it is too bad that the AE doesn't support this feature.

errr...so can any one answer the original question please?!

Now sure how many Apple certified hardware/software developers here that worked on the AE but without calling a level 3 tech support person at Apple I would probably venture to say combination of both hardware and software.
