Antivirus...

Is it worth installing one? what the best out there? dont want something thats going to hog lots of system resource.

1. No, it isn't unless you want to check files for windows-owning friends

2. If you REALLY must do it, try ClamXAV which is, at least, free (and effective, I might add).
 
A lot of people will tell you either Mac's can't get viruses or there are no viruses for Mac. I come from PC's so I figure better safe than sorry. While I wouldn't pay for Mac antivirus software at this time I do use the software Peshwari recommended: ClamXAV. I do a scan twice a year and in the five years I've been doing it I've never had a virus.

I read a great analogy on this very forum about people who decide to keep an anitvirus on a mac. I cant find it right now, but the gist of it was that mac users coming from windows, with antivurs programs installed are like sailors living inland wearing life preserver vests claiming that they are wearing them just in case...
 
There are trojans for a Mac. Go search on Porn4mac, and you'll find out about it. So don't get too smug in the "no virus for a Mac" thinking...

My smugness is off the charts if this is the case. I download stuff from every P2P, bittorrent, and shady site I could imagine and just laugh when I do happen to see an .exe randomly get thrown into my Download que.
Seriously, there is no anonymous threats to Macs. Trojans, shmojans, still not a virus.

So what's not to be smug about,its a Trojan so by definition you have have to dumb enough to give permission to install
 
I would use ClamXav and update virus definitions once in a while. and set clamxav sentry to scan your downloads folder every time something goes into it, that way you don't download something and send it to a windows user.

I think the responsibility for virus checking lies with the user of the recieving computer. Its their OS that has the security holes, which makes it their job to patch them up as best they can.
 
No mac AV=Jackass

Not having AV on a mac is like being infected with ebola, being a carrier even though it doesn't affect you then passing it on to anyone near you who is vulnerable to it.

Don't be a short sighted, self absorbed jackass. Get AV on your mac and live with it.

If you don't like what I said then get thicker skin.

I can't believe this dead horse keeps getting a beating.

Dude, we're Mac users. This cannot be avoided. 😀
But for serious, I have no control over someone else's computer security. And that whole "you may pass infected files to others..." rhetoric doesn't fly with me. I don't move .exe's to other people, much rather carry them on my computer. I don't have any macro viruses propagating via email (cause they can't replicated on a Mac). And to be completely self-absorbed, its not my problem. I know its sounds rough, but if you don't like what I said "then get thicker skin" 😉

This horse will never be beat to death. But perhaps aggressively interrogated a lot.

What's wrong with that? At least, in terms of Microsoft...

It's WORTHLESS to get anti-virus software for a Mac. It is nothing but a resource hog.

If you don't want to be an agent of dissent, tell every Microtard with which you interface to switch back to Windows 98; there aren't any viruses for it anymore.

I can mail you an install disk, if you wish. Mind, I've already used it about thirty times as a senior prank.
