I wanted to know if it was able to run the game since fallout 3 is arriving and purchasing macbook pro was far too unnecessary. thx

fallout 3 and oblivion both comes from betheda software. And i heard fallout 3 is using the same engine as oblivion.

Oblivion Minimum System Requirements:

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
128MB Direct3D compatible video card
and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
DirectX 9.0c (included)
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Keyboard, Mouse

Sorry, but the GMA950 can only access 64MB to use as VRAM.

Edit: For some reason I thought you meant an older MacBook. The newer MacBooks have the X3100 which can use up to 144MB of memory.

Not true. In windows which is where he will be playing this as it's not a mac game, it can access 192mb of ram.

Yes oblivion runs on a macbook, but you will be stuck at low settings mostly.
If you want to give the game a helping hand on your machine check out the mods at

Hope that helps.

minimum memory allocation for the x3100 is 144mb. it can access up to 384mb if needed.

Thats in Windows.

In OS X you're limited to 144MB regardless. The GMA 950 is limited to 64MB regardless in OS X and can access more in Windows.

Neither one is as good as the Radeon 9550 that was in the last iBook though. Apple should be ashamed for taking roughly 3 generational steps backwards regarding the GPU in the MacBooks.

Oh man ..it means i need to pay 500 bucks more for a macbook pro? ...let's see what apple has got to offer in the next macbook line gen.

i just want to play fallout 3 ..that' it !!!

Just because it uses the same engine doesnt mean the game has the same system requirements. Look how many games use the unreal engine and they have tons of different requirements. An engine (though the term is used loosely) is basically code that keeps you from having to program everything from scratch. For example, a physics engine. Pong could use the same physics engine grand turismo uses but they have completely different requirements.

I would safely say that a macbook would probably not run fallout 3 at a playable level. With games and laptops anymore you really need a dedicated gpu.

Probably run like **** really. Shared video cards are simply awful. Get a MacBook Pro with 4 GIGS of ram and you should fly.

I tried to run COD4 and it barely runs on the 2.4Ghz macbook that I had.. so I would say oblivion being a more demanding gpu based game.. I'm sure it would run on the macbook but it wont be playable.

Do you have a source for this?

Because it really isn't true -

http://www.macworld.com/article/50898/2006/05/macbookbench.html

The only game in that test is UT2k4. That game relies more on the CPU than anything. Not to mention detailed (not detail) settings for the game were not given.

I actually had a Celeron 1.1GHz system (Coppermine) with 256MB of RAM and a Radeon 9550 PCI (built by ATI, 256MB). It absolutely blew away my MacBook when it came to playing UT2k4 and Half-Life 2.

Theres honestly something wrong with their iBook if it is only running UT2k4 at 14fps. My old PC was able to push out 30fps at 1024x768 with everything set to high. The MacBooks (GMA 950 and X3100) can't even choke out 30fps at 800x600 with medium settings.

Edit: also want to add that I had a laptop with a Turion64 ML-37 (2GHz), 1GB of RAM, and an ATI Xpress 200M (integrated card but that model had 128MB of dedicated memory). It was able to push UT2k4 at 30-40fps at 1280x800 with everything set to high, with the exception of two maps. So there is definitely something wrong with that iBook and if Apple wants to continue to shaft people with integrated GPUs, they need to look at what nVidia and ATI have to offer as far as chipsets go. A GeForce 7150 has been proven to mop the floor with all other integrated GPUs.

That's not entirely true.

Mac mini (Early 2006), MacBook, iMac (Mid 2006): About the Graphics Processor

GMA 950

The GMA 950 allocates a base amount of 80 MB for video and boot processes at startup. For example, a Mac mini (Mid 2007) with 512 MB of RAM installed has 432 MB of memory available to Mac OS X and applications (512-80=432).

Depending on the application or task being accomplished, Mac OS X may make additional main memory available to the graphics processor for texture use beyond the base amount mentioned above. The most common types of applications that request more system memory to be used as graphics memory are 3D and graphics-intense applications. The most common task would be video mirroring or extended desktop.

I can vouch for oldblivion. It made Oblivion usable on my old FX5500/128.

Somewhat on topic

Anybody know if you can play City of Heroes on a 2.2 Blackbook? Really want to try that game. Don't really want to fork out the cash for a Pro.

Yet on other pages on the Apple site, the story is different. Just like the conflicting Apple Cinema Display specs.
Really? Where? I must admit this info is well tucked away and for about a year I thought it was capped at 64MB too. Lucid information is not one of Apple's strong points. Just look at the description of there software updates. "Fixes bugs." Very informative.

I wouldn't even consider laptop gaming in general. It's an exercise in futility.

Unless you like spending $1,500 - 2,000 a year on a laptop.

You're so good at looking around the Apple site, you should be able to find it very easily. This issue came up not too long ago here in another thread when some hardcore Apple fanboys couldn't admit that ACDs aren't as good as Apple claims they are.

You can get plenty of PCs that are faster than the MBP for $700+ less.

Minitower in signature is made of parts from the past 9 months for under US$700.

I'm talking about laptops. You can find plenty with GeForce 8600M GTs and faster C2Ds for around $1300. In the same price range as the MBP you can get dual GPUs, 1GB of video memory, GeForce 8800M GTX, etc.
