What is the difference between Apple Composite AV Cable and Apple Component AV Cable?

They both cost the same £35! but for travellers to hotels that want to plug in their iPhone and watch their movies on the TV provided which would be the better option and why?

They are two completely different ways of getting video into a monitor or TV.

Composite refers to the oldest standard, where you have three connections on the TV, one for video (yellow, usually) and two for audio (red and white).

Component is the newest analog standard, and this provides three video connections, usually colored red green and blue (but not the same signal as older RGB CRT monitors), and two audio connections (red and white for right and left).

Composite will be with us for some time yet, so that is the most compatible.

That said, component is likely to be the future, and should provide better picture quality, but the set you are playing it on must have component inputs that are compatible with the output from the iPod/iPhone.

For dragging to hotels, the Composite is probably the better choice for at least the next few years.

Yes Viggen61 thanks for that I went for the composite and it worked in the Czech Republic as of 48 hours ago! Good old Red White and Yellow...you know where you are with those.

Must say though they are damn difficult to get off once you are ready to pack and go!

The design of the three 'barrels' is very smooth aluminium and as they are situated very close together its really difficult to pull them off the associated TV plugs.

I wouldn't want to just grab the thin cables and pull hoping the barrels would come off as I think the wires would pull out!

They should have designed them better, with some form of grip pattern on the barrels to get hold of, didn't they think about this? even at school we would test design a prototype before producing it.
