iPod 4G iPod: screen went black, only partially resets

Hi.

My brothers iPod went funny yesterday.

When he turned it on the screen showed the Apple logo as ever, then went black and stopped responding.

He rebooted it with Menu+Select, it rebooted with the Apple logo up but went black again.
I don't think it's totally screwed though because firstly, after the restart it reactivated the 'click' interface sounds through the headphone when he uses the scroll wheel etc..
I plugged it into his MacBook to take a look at it and iTunes recognised it and showed the music on it just fine. Wouldn't play it though, as it won't through the iPod itself.
The HD sounds like it's working just fine, no strange noises or skips or anything.

Any ideas? I'm not too versed in iPod maintenance!

Thanks

Maybe try restoring the firmware through iTunes. This will lose all the data on the iPod though.

Thanks for the reply!

I did actually manage to fix it for him eventually.
I had tried a firmware update and it wasn't having it, installation was unsuccessful.

Eventually it worked but I had to wipe it clean before I tried the firmware installation.

All working now though.
Thanks for your suggestion!
