Are 4k and 8k videos too much for the iPhone X to handle? I've watched a few 8k videos on YouTube, not time lapses, just a regular demo video, which I think there's only one with the game of thrones scene. Anyway, it plays insanely great! But after a while I noticed some stutter towards the end. Like it's having trouble keeping up. I know it could be a number of things but I'm pretty sure it's not an isolated issue as I can replicate the stutter on my friends iPhone X. Maybe it's buffering?? I notice it more towards the end of the iPhone's battery.

If it has trouble doing 4K you should know that 8K will be worst. So many variables involved. You would need a really good WiFi to do 8K. 8K is a few years out for sure.

Some 4K works well for me and other times it does not.
Okay, that is good to know.

I guess 4k and 8k are not made for phones? They look so great on the X though.

How did you watch 8k videos? Do you have 8k screens? For some reason I don’t believe you.

Also the camera sensor is only 12MP, 8k video is 33 megapixels how do you expect that to work?

In fact how did you even watch the 4K videos since your iPhone X screen is only 2k?

YouTube 8k videos. I just did it. I had zero issues. My Comcast speed is 150mb/sec. picture looked gorgeous.

Really highlights the OLED screen. Is the iPhone X REALLY taking advantage of 8k or is it downgrading it to 4K? That I don’t know.

It’s downgraded to 2k. IPhone X does not have a 4K display.

Regardless. Beautiful quality. Once we get past a certain resolution it’s a moot point. Human eye can’t detect any further detail. I think 4K is that point.

It was actually already the retina screen with the iPhone 4 ;)
At least seen by apples marketing team

I didn’t think iOS allowed anything higher than 2k to play. Lack of codec support and battery management at play, I suspect. I’m sure the CPU and GPU could do more if allowed to consume as much wattage as needed.

Ah so it's downgraded. I watched the supposedly 8k and 4k videos on YouTube as well. But yeah regardless it still looks fantastic.

Not sure what I stepped into. Iphone X doesn't sport a 4k screen. Can't say I care about 8k. Heck, Apple is having enough trouble even providing a seamless way for people to actually view 4k video taken with iphone on 4k tv's. Guess we'll need super retina apple 4k tv and icloud 12.0 for that.

What the point of watching 8k unless you have an 8k screen to watch it on? At least you can watch 4K in all its glory on a 4K screen. 8k is pretty pointless atm.
So you might as well never shoot photos over 8MP either, because no one would view it on a screen higher than 4k...

People zoom in and edit photos, just like how people can crop and edit videos, so the higher resolution the more you have to work with.

Yes that’s an option if your a video editor. For general recording and playback it’s pointless.

Not really. Playing content that has a higher resolution than your display sill produces better quality content. Look at a photo zoomed in to 100% and tell me that it looks awesome.

I don’t see any difference watching a 4K video on my 8+ than a 2k or even a native video. Same for my iPad Pro 10.5.

If I played an 8k video on my 4K tv it wouldn’t look any different to the 4K version either.

Photo is different because of the zooming. You never usually zoom in on videos because of the cropping.

This brings up a question that’s somewhat related.

In iTunes, does my phone play the 4K or 1080p version of a movie? Or does my phone play the hdr version? I have no idea what resolution I’m viewing. To further confuse things, I bought an Apple TV 4K and returned it a couple weeks later. Does that mean those movies are downgraded back to 4K?

Yes, iPhoneX can definitely process 4K video. But there is no reason to. iPhoneX only has a 1080Pish screen.

Youtube isn't going to provide more than that. And on the wierd off chance it did, iPhone wills cale it down to 1080P. You simply aren't watching 4K or 8K.

The X is just shy of a 1440 resolution, which outdoes 1080 hands down.

I think 1440p on this size screen is the sweet spot. Anything higher is just unnecessary. Now, shooting 4K is a different matter.

No. Where did you get that?

"2436-by-1125-pixel resolution"
https://www.apple.com/iphone-x/specs/

1125 is only 4% higher than 1080P... Practically the same.

1125 is 22% short of the pixels lines needed for 1440P. Far difference.

Oh bloody hell, my bad. I read the Note 8’s spec sheet. Well, I still stand by my second comment about the sweet spot. So I hope the Plus next year comes with an actually 1440 display.

Smh. How embarrassing.
