I have a late-2013 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. I am thinking about purchasing the Dell UP2414Q to use as an external display, but I am worried about the refresh rate. My understanding is that using DisplayPort, the 13-inch rMBP can only drive the monitor at 30Hz. Will the 4K display be worth the investment at only 30Hz, rather than 60Hz?

Is there a better external display solution for the 13-inch rMBP?

Thanks.

I'm in the exact same predicament, I want a 4k screen monitor but unsure which is best for the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013). I'm surprised that many haven't got a setup like this going already.

Because at 30Hz you will have a choppy experience. I am also surprised why noone has found a hack to run an external at 60Hz.

Because it's a hardware limitation.

Intel's U-series processors will not support 4K at 60 Hz.

Only the ones with an Iris Pro iGPU (i.e. only quad core processors with a Crystal Well cache) can support 4K @ 60 Hz.
