I’m trying out some HDR content with my new ATV 4K by watching The Revenant on iTunes. I set my ATV to 4K HDR@24 Hz. This will likely be a popular setting for those watching movies, but the only chroma option available at that setting is 4:2:2. At around 35:12 into the movie I noticed obvious banding in two back to back shots of the sky. I changed my video setting to 4K HDR@60 Hz and neither 4:2:2 nor 4:2:0 chroma showed this banding. It seems to me that at 4K HDR@24Hz the ATV is only going to output 8-bit color. Perhaps others can confirm. If true, that means people will have to choose between dealing with either 3:2 pulldown judder or 8-bit color banding.
