4k monitor and non-retina mbp?

Hi all,

I presently have a 24'' dell attached via mini display port to my 2011 mbp with discrete graphics. My q: will I be able to use a new 4k mon in scaled resolution?

I do not want more res than me present 1920-1200. Only more clarity.

Is such a setup possible and will it be any clearer?

I believe only the Mac Pro and retina MBP's can due 4K. Even though my iMac has the same GPU as the maxed out MBPr 15inch, I don't believe it will support it due to software not allowing it.
