I just purchased a Samsung U28E510 4k monitor, and am attempting to use it connected to a MacBook Pro 13” (late 2013). This model (integrated Intel Iris GPU) is supposed to be able to drive a 4k monitor at 30hz, and through hacks/custom resolution settings, up to 3840 x 2160/50hz. It does not support 60hz. Using HDMI, I have no problem outputting at 3840 x 2160/30hz with this monitor in HiDPI mode. But when I use Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort, both MacOS and Win10 only give options to output at 2560x1440/59 or 60hz (even with MacBook Pro internal display off). No option exists for the 3840 x 2160/30hz that works fine over HDMI. This doesn’t make any sense to me. Any idea why 3840 x 2160/30hz isn’t available over DisplayPort but works fine over HDMI? I don’t know if there is something wrong with the monitor not reporting the proper supported resolution, or the DisplayPort cable is bad (which supposedly is 1.2 compatible), or the computer for why this isn’t working.

Using custom resolutions (Intel GPU control) on Windows & MacOS Sierra (SwitchResX), I can get up to 3840 x 2160. However, Win10 won’t let me set anything above 30hz (but shows in HiDPI), whereas MacOS/SwitchResX can enable 52hz using the provided settings, but does not show in HiDPI. If I do a custom 3840 x 2160/30hz to get this to work over DisplayPort, it also does not show in HiDPI (but does do HiDPI natively at the same resolution over HDMI). Is there any way to trigger HiDPI mode with SwitchResX custom resolutions?

Any suggestions on how to finally enable both 3840 x 2160 at 30hz or 52hz over DisplayPort with HiDPI would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 
My opinion only:

Use the connection that works for you, and don't bother messing with the one that doesn't.

Life just goes better that way...
