4K Playback

Hi,

I have just bought a 2016 MacBook Pro with touch bar. I have a dell 3216q monitor and I want to out videos at 4k but I am having performance issues. Can it be codec problems? Im hoping spending close to 2k on a MacBook it can handle 4k video playback. Connection is at 4k 60htz

Any advice would be great.

I am using vlc and the video type is mkv.

As far as I know, H.265/HEVC hardware-based decoding is not supported on current Apple models.
H.264/AVC decoding hardware is onboard, so should play back without much fuss.

PS 60fps footage seems to be challenging for my early-2013 MBP.

Full 4k support (re h.265) probably won't come to the MacBook Pro's until the late 2017 models, or even 2018.

Opinion:
Steve is gone.
It's time for full 4k and BluRay support on the Mac.

Looks like Intel has HEVC hardware in it's Kaby Lake platform:

Someone in better know might add, which AMD and nVidia chipsets will have HEVC decoding onboard.

To answer the question in there....sort of, yes....

In VLC can you right click the MKV in question, click "media information" and post the Stream 0 and 1 information? Also any other relevant information you are aware of like 10 bit and actual resolution.

Your Mac is easily capable of 4k output. Even HEVC but HEVC is too generic to mean much all by itself.

i was able to test play 4k h.265 using this player https://lhc70000.github.io/iina/, same file would not play using vlc
