Was curious about whether Apple plans to support 60Hz 4K resolutions for the haswell Macbook Pros. Hardware wise, Intel has said that Iris/Iris Pro should be able to handle this and the bandwidth is there with the inclusion of displayport 1.2 over thunderbolt 2. However, Apple lists only 2560x1600 as supported over displayport on their spec page for these machines.

Given the hardware support for 4K over thunderbolt 2, I imagined that Apple would add support into OS X for the 2013 Macbook Pros once the Mac Pros were released. However, now that Apple has released the Mac Pros, it seems like this might not be the case. Under the configuration page for the new Mac Pros it says that

Compatibility: 4K DisplayPort operation only compatible with the new Mac Pro (Late 2013). 4K HDMI operation compatible with MacBook Pro (Late 2013) and the new Mac Pro (Late 2013).

To me, this says that Apple does NOT plan on enabling 60Hz 4K over thunderbolt for the late 2013 Macbook Pros. What do you all think?

That's good news! I wonder why they would post that comment about only HDMI working with 4K on the Macbook Pros then–– are they making a special build of OS X to only support 4K for the Mac Pros for the next couple months?

Might be worth checking into! Anyone have an apple dev account who can look?

Wish I had one :p

Next year it's looking like they'll get more affordable–– Dell has a 28 inch one coming out at under $1000

Where? Would you mind referring to a source?
