I understand what this field is used for (used by Siri) but what I don't understand is why they made it so that you have to have yourself as a contact in the phone so that siri can use your name and address etc.

how many people have themselves listed in their contacts? there's even a built in 'my number' field in the contacts that stop you from having to create a contact for yourself.

am i missing something here?

I have my contact info on my phone so that I can easily send it either via text or email to people.
