I have had my 4S since launch and just the last month or so my battery life is on par with the droid x it replaced. I used to get through the day and have 25-30 percent left when I get off work at 6 or 7pm but now I am looking for a charger around 2 or 3. I restored the phone back to original settings through itunes and still no luck. Hoping someone has some insights on what to try.

If the battery life was still bad after cleaning it out, I would bet the battery is at end of life. If you want to bring it back to life, I am pretty sure that Apple will replace the battery and you should be good as new.
The cost of a new battery will still be way less than a new phone.
