4S - If 3G drops, doesn't return on its own

Over the last couple of days I've noticed something with my 4S that never happened with previous iPhones. If 3G coverage drops for whatever reason and it reverts to a lower speed connection, when 3G is available again, my phone doesn't pick it up automatically. The only way I can get back on 3G is to enable and disable airplane mode or turn the phone off and back on.

Has anyone else noticed this or do I just have a dud?
