i have noticed that my 4s tends to heat up alot when doing basic tasks like texting and using the web. could this have anything to do with bad battery life?

While it shouldn't be getting too warm doing light tasks such as those you mentioned, it's highly unlikely that the iPhone would 'overheat' as such.

It does, however, sound like something could be running in the background, causing the CPU to overwork.

Have you tried the basic stuff, such as resets/restoring?

Mine gets pretty hot randomly usually on the bottom right when I'm web browsing or stuff. I think it happens when service or 3G isn't fast and it starts to overheat when trying to use internet but im not sure. I also have bad battery can't get over 5 hours

No.

Like a computer, the phone does heat up if you are doing multiple tasks at the same time, especially if you were browsing Safari on 3G

The phone is a computer, remember that
