4S quickly changes from 3G to wifi upon unlock

I've read a few threads about this but they all referred to a bug in iOS4.. but I'm running iOS 5.1.1 and this is occurring.

So i'm wondering if this is happening to anyone else... and if notifications that come over data like Twitter, Facebook, ESPN etc will be using my data plan instead of wifi to push notifications through. I'm kind of concerned since I have a limited data plan

iOS is working as it is designed to. If the 3G signal is good, the iPhone will put the WiFi to sleep to conserve battery life. A good 3G signal, 4-5 bars, uses less power than WiFi.

Yep, wifi is off when the phone is asleep.
