So I'm new to the whole iPhone 4/4S design and am just noticing that there's a bit of a rattle when I place it on my desk. Feels like the rattle is coming from the top end of the phone. Is this normal for the iPhone 4S?

Thanks!

A thicker case, like the Speck Candyshell will muffle that sound quite a bit in my experience. That is, if it bothers you.

Mine does it too. I'm pretty sure its the power button moving around a little. Notice you can push it back and forth a fraction of a millimeter with your fingernail.

Have checked out a bunch at the three local apple stores and everyone I tried made the rattle but there were one or two that were less pronounced (my rattle is very very audible).

Anyhow, yup normal.

Probably had to do with the new image stabilization for video.

I'm not calling u picky, but I've owned about 20 or more phones in the past 2 years since the original droid when android became a player and I've read In every forum where people find something wrong with something on every phone. Of all the phones i have ever owned I have only had a problem with 1 and it turned out that was a charger and not the phone itself. I've heard this rattle but it doesn't bother me a bit since the phone works flawlessly. Also, otter box has made a new commuter case specifically for the 4S and I used the commuter on the 4, the one for the S is a much better fit and overall the best designed case I've ever seen that combines decent protection without adding too much bulk.

Ksizzle, you're right there are always miniscule non important things with each phone but I no longer need a tambourine around the house :D

Yes mine rattles, and so do about 99% of them. Go to an Apple store and you'll hear on mostly all of them. I was told from Apple it's the little motor that vibrates, and that's normal to hear because if it were tightened, it wouldn't work properly. I think it's crap personally. I understand a motor makes it vibrate but with Apple being the incredible company they are, it blows my mind that there is annoying cheap sounding rattle like a toy when you set it down, tap it, move it, etc. It sucks!

Lmfao at this one! It is 100% not the vibrating motor!

It is however the auto focus on the camera and 100 % normal!

I know the prevailing theory is that it's the camera (this is the first I've seen someone say it's the auto focus), but I've yet to see any proof that it's the camera.

Considering you're also the first I've seen say it's "100%" not something else and is "100%" the auto focus, can you provide some proof? The af works using software and a motor...now, there's not an extra motor from the 'tap to focus' feature, no? So why doesn't the iP4 rattle as well?

Both the ip4 and s camera lense move in and out using electro magnets if u turn your camera towards you when it's focusing you will see this in action. When the app is closed this action is no longer powered up leaving slight play in the lens. It's the lens moving freely that generates the noise.

The linear vibration motor in the ip4 can't rattle if you've seen one you'd understand why and the ip4s motor is totally different again will not generate a rattle.

I've never heard of this issue with the iP4. And I never said that I thought it was the vibrate motor so not sure why the bit on that.

By asking for proof that it is indeed an 'issue' with the camera, I mean a link to some official statement or from ifixit or someone who has done a tear down of the device.

Even with the camera not in use, I don't think it should be normal for the lenses to have some play...should still be fixed in place.

Google it it's very much been talked about. Of you want proof strip the camera out of your ip4/s and shake it!

I've been concerned about this as well. It's a relief to hear that it's normal and nothing to be concerned about. :)

My 3GS, 4, and 4S have all done this - I'm pretty sure it's been the silent mode rocker switch on all of them...

Its pretty obvious that the sound is coming from the power button. Sounds from a motor? sheesh, this phone attracts some idiots...
