4s reloaded all emails on reboot

I noticed a few minytes ago that one of my email addresses wasnt fetching any of the emails and hadn't done so since this afternoon. I decided to do a hard reset,. When the phone was on again all the emails reloaded, as new, so I now have 500 unread emails?! At least the last 20 emails are the ones that hadnt been recieved yet but now I have to manually scroll through and open 500 emails. Those emails are all read on the mail server so not sure why they appear unread, or why ALL emails got resent.

Any ideas?
