My ipad mini (Retina) is currently running 7.0.something
My iphone 4S is going to stay on 7.0.6 unless anyone has a particularly compelling reason I should go up.

I had left my mini alone, also, because I've read it's easier to keep the ecosystem happy if my iDevices are both the older OS...
But. I want to put MS Office on my ipad and it requires at least 7.1 so I guess I'll have to upgrade to 8.3...

So, what exactly happens when my iPad is 8 and my phone is still 7?
I heavily rely on the cloud sync for my calendar, for example...

7.1 is so much better than 7.0. You should have updated when you had the chance. I guess you'll have to install 8.3 instead.

You need to be specific by what you mean "what happens".

What happens to what? What's the area of concern?

For example, I heavily rely on cloud sync for my calendar. Will the two different OSs affect it?

How about the sync-ing between other apps?
And is there a compelling reason to move my phone up to 8?

If it's just calendar, contacts and such you'll be fine.

Any other syncing such as documents that use iCloud drive in ios8 will break

Only if you enable iCloud Drive - i think if you keep the old style syncing it should be fine :)

you mean to say that documents/data (not contacts/reminders,etc) syncing work fine under ios8? Didnt really work for me when i updated but if that is the case, i guess they changed it?

I believe that documents/data syncs fine unless you enable iCloud drive. Thats my understanding of it.

I'll check and see if it is the case, if I can get a hold of my brother's iPhone 4.

Yes, I wish I had, too. Kept meaning to, then missed it when 8 rolled out.

However, that really doesn't answer my question...

Download the 7.1 .ispw file and manually install it via iTunes, you can still go to 7.1 without upgrading all the way to 8 I think!

Sorry but if you don't know what you're talking about then please try not to give advice that's incorrect and misleading to others. You cannot install 7.1 on the 4S anymore because Apple stopped signing it. You can only install 8.3.

Because I was obviously intentionally giving incorrect information. If you could be less obnoxious, that'd be great.

Apologies, OP - forgot about the signing issue!

I said sorry! It's fine I know you didn't do it on purpose. Just trying to help.
