I have an iMac on order, and while I wait for it to arrive, I'm looking into getting my gear from my Windows desktop to work on the Mac. Most of my gear will work, but it turns out that I'm going to need to do something about my 5.1 speaker set.

I have an old-school Creative Extigy (picture below), and I'm pretty sure that OS X will not pick up on it -- hell, Windows 7 doesn't pick up on it either! But what I notice is that it has optical input and output as well as 5.1 output.

If I just provide power to the Extigy, would I be able to get 5.1?

Actually, I just found the answer to my own question. It turns out that it CAN be used as a standalone device, provided with power and the right cables. [

Link to the manual -- go to page 2-10.

For anyone else who might be struggling with 5.1, this might be your best bet!
