5.1 on MacBook

I have just got a the corrst optical cable to connect my MacBook to my AV Reciever and it works fine but i cant use the volume controls for some reason... does anyone know why. and is there any good software for managing the 5.1 like sub level and EQ etc?

its playing throught the optical just not in 5.1 :S
