I find the release day and time a bit peculiar...

(fanboys do not hate on me, I have more Apple devices than most, but 5 pm on a Friday seems, again, odd.)

OK everybody, just checking.

did not realize all these other great Apple products were released end-of-day Friday also...

Right. If you are releasing bad news, you do it Friday at 5pm.

If you are releasing a hot new product that consumers will line up to buy all weekend long, you do it Friday at 5pm.

Same time, different motives.

That puts the press release of "We sold x units in the first weekend!" on Tuesday or Wednesday, which is a good news time. :)

They are trying to weed out the real fanboys from the posers. They know that normal people are going to go out on a friday night so the ones waiting in line, the true fanboys, can get it first :D

All part of the Jobs and Company show. Long lines with news crews reporting on it all day. Tens of millions of dollars in free publicity.

Apple takes care of their customers all day with food and drink building even more goodwill.

They have this down to a science. And it works.

I work in commercial construction. 5pm on a Friday is when I receive all my good news, since it is when clients typically call to award a contract. Usually because they dick around, barter and committee all week, then decide at the last minute on Friday they had better act or risk losing another week of productivity.

Yes, b/c the weekend has started, or is about to, and people are having fun at Happy Hour or getting ready to go out for the evening or in line for their iPad 2 and are no paying attention to heavy news.

FWIW Friday @ 5pm has traditionally been Apple's "go to" launch day/time. Many an OS X and iPod were released then precisely b/c it's the weekend and most people don't have the same time constraints they have during the week. In other words, its not odd at all. What is odd is when Apple does 8am launches on a workday.
