Look - I'm not disappointed in the 4S - It's a great phone - it's just not enough of a reason to upgrade from the iPhone 4 (for me). And it appears - for many. But Apple wasn't creating the 4S specifically for me. An upgrade from me and others with the iPhone 4 would be icing/somewhat expected from some. But perhaps not the majority.
Tim made a comment at the Keynote that the iPhone 4 makes up 50% (he said 1/2) of all the iPhones sold to date. That means that 50 percent of the people were on an iPhone (or had left the Apple ecosystem) with outdated specs - especially for OS5. And that, my friends - is the target market.
Would they have sold even more if they made the iPhone 5 with "super" specs. Perhaps. But they didn't "NEED" to - and I would imagine - far more cost effective to bump up the specs JUST enough to sell the 4S to the Apple die-hards + ALL of those who, quite frankly, do need to upgrade from pre-4 devices.
It's also got a built in audience for all of the Sprint subscribers.
Let's face it - the iPhone 4S will sell and sell well. It might not be the phone I and others need/want in a new phone phone - but many will still be enticed to have the latest and greatest.
As for me - the iPhone 4 and my personal use case doesn't warrant the upgrade. The updated specs don't appeal to me. iOS 5 does (but not all - such as Siri) and I'll look forward to the OS update.
I understand the disappointment - but I think it's safe (and always has been) to say that Apple does what Apple wants and what Apple determines the user needs, not the other way around.
