A dead sperm whale being transported through Tainan City on its way to a research station suddenly exploded yesterday, splattering cars and shops with blood and guts.

Certified by authorities as the largest beached whale on record in Taiwan, the 17-meter 50-ton carcass was being transported by a flat-bed trailer-truck ...

The visual image of all these stunned Taiwanese standing around with whale guts dripping off them... well I would rather have powermac updates, but this will do for now ...

Not as bad as the Oregon beached whale that the State Dep't Of Transportation sent in to 'blow' up - they used a good amount of tnt and ended up sending chunks of rotting whale meat flying every where. One large piece even totalled a car.

Nice link, though! :D

That is a raining of cats and dogs that I could do without. That certainly makes for a lot of blubber. :p

I saw the Oregon video clip and it was amazing! That was a lot of whale. The Mac admin for my school's graphic communications department has it among his files somewhere.

So, can something like this happen to a dead human?

A dead anything. It's actually a real danger in rangelands, and a good reason never to approach a dead cow when you don't know the state of its decomposition. A coworker of mine once made that very mistake...messy...

So can the explosion hurt you, or is it just enough to make a mess?

William the Conquerer (King of England from 1066 to 1087) exploded when they tried to squeeze him into his coffin. Accounts said the stench was awful.

I think that we are all better off not seeing any pictures. The pictures would not be pretty. You would definitely need a strong stomach. From experience, I can only imagine the site.

Flash didn't fire - too dark to get an image:(

That makes perfect sense, actually, seeing as how it happened in the dark ages and all...
