Whats the value of a general 500gb ssd?

What will the value be in 1,2, 3, years down the road, with respect to the market and newer ssds coming out?

im specifically looking at a samsung 840 500gb, is $200 a good deal?

thx.

Looks like recent eBay auctions for that drive used are around $249, so yes $200 would be a good deal.

I think SSD prices are going to continue downward, so I would expect much for that same drive used in a couple years.

At this point in time, any SSD you can buy for less than $0.50/GB is a solid deal.

As it's used, give it a proper SATA Secure Erase. This is not the same as a format done with Disk Utility. The process is easiest if you can connect it to a Windows machine and use Samsung's software. You can do it on a Mac, but it's more complicated. Guides are available through an online search.

A SATA Secure Erase resets all the flash cells to their default state, so the drive will perform as-new when you're ready to reinstall OS X.

It's ~$1 per GB for SSD now, you'll probably start seeing significant price drops from that in the next couple years.
