500 Internal Server Error

Sometimes when viewing my site, people tell me that they receive a 500 Internal Server Error. I'm wondering what this means and what could cause this. Also, my host says that nothing is wrong, even though there is. Is there anything I should ask them to try regarding this issue? Thanks.

The error log is empty.

It's usually a server configuration issue. Your host may have had some down time due to some technical difficulties. It can also occur when web applications puke on input that throws them off.
