I don't get it. Why do you need >500 posts to have an avatar? Am I missing something here?

Them's the rules. Hang around and contribute, make a commitment and you'll have one in no time.

Is it that important?

Site rules.

arn wanted to ensure people contributed to the site (by posting legitimate posts) for a while before being granted the ability to have an avatar.

I guess this is alright, but isn't 500 posts a bit excessive?

If it was up to me, it'd be around the 6,470 mark. :D

Some people have managed to get theirs in 8-12 weeks of consistent posting. Not spamming, mind... not spamming at all. Every post a carefully contructed gem of insightful, articulate observation. ;)

Don't worry, it doesn't take that long to get an avatar. Just don't spam and you'll get it in no time. The time will pass by like nothing ...

... Looked at my join date. It took me two and a half years to get my avatar!

Edit: I'm just a slow person. It won't take you that long. Not trying to scare you or anything

I'm a bit of an impatient person, but, hopefully, if I just keep on posting I'll reach 500 in no time!:)

excessive for what? and again, what's it really matter?

But if getting an avatar doesn't matter one way or another to us, then why not just allow everyone to get one, or not allow avatars at all? I mean, how does the number of posts relate to having an avatar, or posting quality for that matter? Someone might be a contributing member after 10 posts, or even 1 insightful post.

Oops, that's just my ENTP personality shining through again.

bandwidth was more of an issue when the rules were set than it is now, i believe. i could be wrong on that.

While there's a fair amount of leniency, try to avoid posting just to bump your thread count, as it'll end up bringing unwanted attention from the powers that be.... ;)

so we can feel special with out cpu code numbers and comical pictures.

if everyone had a tar like mine the world would go blind in precisely 5 seconds.

If you recognise that, why not change it to something less irritating?

some can handle it's supreme awesomeness.
Actually, no. It's supremely annoying when you are trying to read and off to your left there is this animated "HEY! Look at meee!! Look at meee!!" avatar. Tasteful animation is cool. Yours is just obnoxious. Reminds me of the toddler who is always tugging on mommy's skirt, begging for attention. But thats just me. Not trying to be rude.

Trust me, it's not just you.

As for the avatar thing, I think it's a good way of being able to spot out established members.

OK, enough bitching about animated avatars, it's hardly the end of the world, and the original question has been answered (as it has already been, many, many times).
