500gb 2.5" HD any ideas when?

I wouldn't count on it any time in the immediate future, that's for sure. Densities are increasing steadily, but since 2.5" drives JUST hit 250GB (and only from one manufacturer at 5400 RPM, at that), I don't expect to see 500GB drives on the market for at least another year, if not longer.
If you're already stuffing a 250GB laptop drive, then it sounds like you need either one or more externals (can be bus-powered FW, and I think somebody even makes a 2-drive laptop case now), or just get yourself a proper desk-bound storage system.

i have 1.4tb of external storage but im traveling with this system so much external storage dosent help me much, i do have an 80gb usb powered HD that ill start carrying with me, but its still a matter of hooking it to use it, and i cant get windows to install on any of my external drives...18 months...sigh, oh well

I just bought that 250 scorpio drive and am planning to install it myself over the weekend.
I was wondering, did you have it installed by an apple tech or did you also do it yourself? The reason why i'm asking is I want to know if there is a ribbon cable glued to my Santa Rosa MBP's current hard drive so that i know what to expect.

I'll be getting that drive as well, but I'm going to ComUSA to have their tech install it for me (I love my warrantee). OP, seeing as 2.5" drives barely made it to 250 right now (someone's coming out with a 300 Gb I read somewhere) I'd expect your capacity to be achieved in at least a year, maybe two... I'm no HD scientist guy.

If you have a very high speed connection in the places where you need to use your laptop, then you should just get a very high speed connection at your house, then buy a used G4 400 mhz for $100 and set it up as a secure file server over the net. Then you can keep all your source files for different projects at home and then just download the source files you need for a given project onto your laptop.
There are a LOT of pitfalls that would make this system not work well, but if your needs don't conflict with those weak spots then this might be the perfect system for you.

lol just get a USB or FW harddrive, plug it into the mini, connect it to your network, turn on file sharing in system pref, on your other computer map ot the network name of the computer, the harddrive will appear wen u try to connect to the computer, click it and WaLa!!!!!
250gb aint that much if u think about it....i filled 500 in 3months
yup, i have 2tb of space on my PC its about 75% full, and i have 1.4gb of external storage between two mybooks and a maxtor ext drive
I am sorry i am supposed to say how can i do it over the internet, i have lots of files that i want access to when i travel and it would be helpful if i can use a safe server.

im looking at buying a sata exprescard for me mbp, then get a few esata drives, because i cant do internal i have to do external
but yea might get a 500 and a 750. can never have enuf space!!!well, you could run a ftp server on it, and map your router to open its port, just make sure you have a good secure password on the ftp server

the mybooks are 500gb each and the maxtor is 400gb, but yeah, one macbook is fat32 and the other is mac formatted its a bunch of projects though, HD footage of my cruise, my parents cruise to europe (SD) and some stuff from my movie Kyle and Steve Save the World, most of that footage is on my PC though
aahh ok wow thats a lot of HD stuff. i cant afford a HD camera they cost that much. hell i cant even afford a 500gb harddrive!!!!! parents wont pay for it either. i have mostly tv shows ive taped, movies ive converted, computer games. uumm there are 40gb of ripped dvd's i really should burn but i dont have DL dvd's.. lol it all adds up
edit:get your own personal satellite?yeah fiberoptic would be nice
