Nice site, but what strikes me the most is the amazing sample photos they've populated the site with. Some are just beyond possible.

No Kidding. They is some really great pics. I hesitated to even join since I don't think my work is good enough.
I know this is an older thread (but I haven't been here in a bit), but 500px is much better than FlickR in my opinion. The layout, the presentation, even the free account is way better than FlickR. I have noticed that the web compression is much MUCH less on 500px. Pretty much how I see my photo in CS4 is how it will look on 500px. I also like the rating system.
