Hi,

My macbook seems to be running very hot in the past week. The fan is always running at full power and the processor temperature never goes under 70 degrees Celsius (currently at 75). It acts as though I would be converting a movie or something because the battery lasts about 1:45 - 2:00 while usually it can last up to 5 hours. I did a restart and if I check on the Force Quit Applications window, I only have Finder, Safari and MSN Messenger opened.. I'm not downloading anything and the room temperature is 22. Does anyone has any ideas on what could be putting that much strain on my processor?

Thanks.

Have you checked activity monitor? Check for anything using a high percentage of CPU power.

here's a screenshot of Activity Monitor

screenshot11yp1.png

p.s. the scrollbar in Activity Monitor only scrolls downs to Preview.

odd...cpu user at 53% is high and will cause the high temperature - the activity monitor does not show anything using any degree of the cpu and the cpu graph is showing a lot of activity - much more.

Can you click at the top of the cpu column and it will sort the processes into highest to lowest.

Something is using the cpu but it is not on your list..

it is already sorted from highest to lowest. the process on top of the list is the application I used to take the screenshot... Is there an application I can download that will show the hidden process(es)?

Do a search for mdworker in your Activity Monitor - either Spotlight or behind the scenes logging is inclined to send the fans into the loud zone.

Also change My Processes to All Processes in the drop list window next to the search window. That will show up the absent miscreant.

NEVERMIND, FOUND IT.

i had to click the scroll down menu on the top right corner and select All Processes, and there it was, the Printer Job Pending process dating back from last week when I unplugged my printer too quickly.

yes - printer jobs will eat the cpu (especially pending ones) - bet the fans are back at 1800 rpm now.

hey

well I don't have the same problem but i just got my macbook and I was wondering what temp and rpm is normal? I don't know that much about laptops. I went and downloaded istat because i see everyone has it.

right now just using safari my CPU is at 52 and the fan is at 1797rpm.

sound normal?

and what would kind of numbers would be red flag/warning type?

your current stats are okay.

it becomes dangerous when it's higher than 80, but your MacBook will shut itself down if it becomes to hot... shouldn't be a problem though since the fan does a great job at keeping it cool.

alright thanks for that

and Zaeyde you can download it off the apple website under downloads
it's called iStat pro

My computer is always this hot. The reason (for me) seems to be the lack of a good graphics card.
