All this talk of "will the PAYG 3G be available at launch or not" made me wonder...... If the Apple Stores around the UK were selling them then assume (for a moment) they might be PAYG only.

However, if you look at the iPhone pages "where to buy" for the UK it only states O2 shops and Carphone Warehouse..... No mention of Apple Stores.....

Am I reading too much into this? No PAYG at launch day?

I can't imagine apple not selling their own product, to be honest. That would be, well, silly.

No PayG at launch is looking likely at this moment.. but I'm sure it's not beyond apple to work out how to get people to sign contracts in store.

Yes, I agree, that would be silly..... but I would have thought it would have mentioned the Apple Stores on the UK 'where to buy' page too....

The US page does mention Apple Retail Stores

Those arranging apple store meet-ups will be none too pleased....

With so few stores in the uk (3 or 4 is it?) would it matter?

There's about 15 stores in the UK.. which is quite good given how compact the UK is compared to the US (there's 2 within about 10 minutes of each other around here).

It'll matter when you turn up at 7:02am on Friday and there's a queue of bewildered geeks wondering when the store is supposed to be opening...

It was reported through some sources, I think MacWorld UK was one that said Apple stores don't have the systems in place to issue contracts and carry out credit checks. However, it did say that O2 and Apple were looking into this so it may change before the launch.

But with Apple saying that O2 and CPW being the only places to buy then this will probably be the case. Although it will seem strange Apple stores not selling their own products. But they will probably sell the PAYG version when it becomes available as there are some rumours going around that the PAYG version won't be available at the July 11th launch and will follow later.

That's exactly what I think.... I think this does mean no PAYG at launch.

Really? I tried searching the apple uk site for a list and drew a blank. Can you point me to a list? I know my nearest is at Sheffield Meadowhall.

[EDIT: Just seen the link - thanks]

The nearest Apple store to me is 2-3 hours away... There are about 5 o2 stores within an hour though... I want a PAYG but I hope that I can get it from O2 (I still hope that it's only the CPWH that won't be selling them!)

A while ago the local Apple Store thought they'd just be selling the PAYG ones.

the last one had different rules.
now it's sign on the line or leave the store.
I think Apple will stock the PAYT iPhones once they are available which I guess is gonna be end of July/early August.
