Hi Anyone knows a good WebCam for the Mac Pro ?
as i heard most of the webcams has problems with mac OS .

thanks and is the iSight still around to buy ? :O

:D

Nope. Because Europe banned a substance in the iSight, Apple stopped selling it in the U.S.A.

Yes, it doesn't make sense.

Any FireWire webcam or camcorder works. The Macam driver can handle hundreds of other USB webcams that iChat can't normally see.

I have a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. It works great.

No Mac drivers but is recognized and very clear pics on the other end. Can not use the full features of the cam but it does the job.

Very happy with it.

This is one of the reasons why I can't believe why Apple haven't updated / renewed their Cinema Displays yet...

Every Mac with a built-in display has an iSight, but the Mac mini and G5 / Mac Pro owners can't get an Apple "iSight" which is simply so much nicer than any other webcam.
I am lucky, I have an iSight from the recent past, and love it. It's sitting so nicely on my ACD 23". :)

For iChat purposes, it's brilliant. And, ofcourse.. it looks so nice. :)
The resolution is 640 x 480, and will use a FireWire port.

I should advise you to get the 2nd generation iSight (the one with the magnetic piece to place it on your aluminium Cinema Display)

I never actually thought about using a camcorder. Anyone have any idea how to do this?

Thought I read or heard that when using a USB camera (as opposed to a Firewire) you lose some of the functions (like screen backgrounds in iChat).

Can anyone answer this. Does USB camera have limited features (in iChat) over a Firewire?

Probably not if you would test the same camera with either FW or USB. But FW camera's are more expensive, so have better quality components, sensors etc. I don't think the price of the controller for usb or FW is so much different. Apple have made the iSight FW probably because of the power requirements or because at that point they weren't so much into the USB strategy. Weren't the first iSights introduced when Apple still sold USB1.1 Macs?

EDIT: Yep, that's the reason. iSight was introduced in June 2003 and by that time they still sold the lamp-iMac-G4's with USB1.1. Same thing with the iPod: it was all FW in the beginning...

I love my isight camera and I'm very glad that I got one before Apple discontinued them. You can still find them on ebay but they aren't cheap. Good luck in your search.

For some reason whenever Apple discontinuous something after a short while the product fetches a high price on eBay. Take a look at the iPod HiFi.

philips spc 1300nc works great for all apps and has very high video quality though ive never used it for recording purposes just ichat/skype/etc. Good luck if you can find one since i think they are discontinued on my side of the pond
