These SSD's are becoming cheap and I find it hard to justify spending $2300 on a laptop that has only a 256 gb SSD in it.

Is there any hope Apple will offer 512 gb SSD with the base line Haswell 15" rMBP?

Not a chance. They will milk the 256 GB and offer the 512 GB for extra $$$.

I think that it is more likely that they lower the price of the base model so if you upgrade it may reach that price point. Don't think it will happen "soon" but you never know. Maybe Apple will realize they should give a little more to the prosumers.

third this..

while i think these computers should have 512, i dont see a huge difference between 256/512. neither is a lot of storage and if you have any substancial amount of data you need an external source regardless.

256 here and... I have Zero reason to pay for more. Anything big goes on an external. And the 256 gives me enough working room vs say 128

SSD prices are falling, but Apple tends to be a couple years behind before prices really fall. Apple SSD's are already twice the price of their competitors. I got a 512GB SSD for my non-Retina for less than the cost of a 256GB SSD as a build-to-order option.

apple is apple....

SSD price will be down, but just 4-5months later...
it's not likely that apple will adjust the price of the whole package.

No way 512gb is coming in the base. I absolutely think they'll drop the starting price of the machine by $100-$200, but the base model will still be equipped with 256gb. By the time you upgrade it'll probably be around $2300 though.

This seems likely, especially if they eliminate the non-retine models and need something for the old, lower price point.

Apple is in no hurry to provide you with storage. They (and everyone else) is trying to drag you to the cloud. Once you're dependent on them for storage that 5GB "free" won't be enough and you'll need a subscription. Microsoft has already done this with Office 365. It's a sign of things to come.
