Griffin Wave for iPhone 3G - scratches my phone

Problem 1:

Putting it on was the first thing I did with the phone. Three weeks down the line, I took the case off in order to clean the screen protector thoroughly.

To my horror, I have numerous scratches and markings on the chrome and black plastic which were *not* present on the brand new iPhone 3G when I put the case on.

The case has in fact done more damage to my phone's casing than what would have occurred if I used the phone without a case for three weeks!

I can confirm that no dust or particles were visible on the phone before applying the case (which may in turn have been abrased by the case).



Problem 2:

The 'rubbery' coating on the plastic is already starting to wear off, and in no minor way either. It has left several areas of completely clear plastic, and the case (and phone) look tired and worn even though both are less than a month old and have been subject only to light use.



I am really annoyed with the poor quality of this product - has anyone else experienced the same?

I dont have any problems with the dust scratches, because I opened mine every day to clean it. But i did notice that there is are scratches that remove the black rubber and expose a clear scratch (not cool)... returning it tomorrow.

I bought mine about a week after I bought the phone and I have had no problems. I take it off every few days and wipe my phone and case. I make sure I keep dirt out from underneath it. So far I love it.

Wow, that's bad. I have the Griffin Elan Form which has not scratched my phone at all after numerous removals. I do also have the Wave which it looks like I will NEVER use.

Some scratches from cases are acceptable IMO. They are protecting a drop which would cause far worse than a scratch, but I think what you have there is an unacceptable amount of scratches from a case.

Sorry that happened, you still have a great phone though so just try to ignore it. Or do that brushed aluminum look mod...

I wouldn't be happy either. My iPhone is completely naked, and doesn't have one scratch on it. If I put it in a case, and it came out looking like that, I would be heated!

This happened to me with a Belkin hard case on a Gen 1 iPhone. I've also seen it with silicone cases.

Grit WILL get under the edges and you'll end up with a scratched phone.
For those who remove the case on a daily basis, the act of pulling the case off and on will also cause scratches but not as severe.
The only way to prevent this is to put an invisible skin on it first then add the case.
Unfortunately you had to learn the hard way and I feel for ya.

This has been mentioned here before so keep an eye on the forums as they could have saved your phone in situations like this.

I completely agree with you, however, the skins (BG,IS,BSE) are almost impossible to get to sit flush on the iPhone 3G. So if the cornerS crease, which they will, dust and lint that gets stuck there will cause issues also. What is a man to do :/?

I love Griffin products and I have used them for my iPod Gen 4 and newer Classic. However, I am very disappointed in this case/shell and I have gone back to my silicon skin from some no-name vendor for now. I hope to find something better soon, but this is working for now.

It was a pain to put on, align the plastic sheet, and the back of it got really spotty looking in short time. No matter how much I tried to clean the back the cloudy appearance got weird looking and make it look worse.

The seams don't line up on the sides either. I attempted several times to put this thing on, one side goes over the other 'lip' of it and the other goes under, but still, it's just not worth it.

Not recommended.

This is pretty common knowledge. You HAVE to keep the dirt out of the inside of the case. Any case that will allow stuff to get inside will do this....not just the Griffin.

Argghh! I just put this case on my phone yesterday but after seeing this thread today I have taken it off again. I got the wave because it had lots of good reviews on the Apple store website and I liked the look of it. I really like the case (minus the crappy screen cover) but don't want to damage my phone. I am sure I will drop the phone at some point and want some protection. I guess I could put on a bodyguardz skin first but those seem like a huge pain to apply. Is everyone having these scratching problems or is it just a vocal minority? Has anybody had a wave on for a while with no scratching problems?
