Deciding between 7200rpm 500gb and 5400rpm 750gb drive in the new 2.2ghz model. I def don't need the 750gb, so it's more a question of speed vs noise.

I will use the computer for audio recording. Recording to an external fw drive.

When I put a 7200rpm into my old 13" it was definitely louder than he stock 5400rpm. Not terrible, but slightly annoying in a quiet recording environment.

What would you go with?

I've never been able to hear my 7200 Scorpio in my MBP after swapping out the 5400. I'd say yeah on the faster but buy it yourself and use the slower stock 750GB as an external TimeMachine.

Get a 5400rpm, and eventually buy an aftermarket SSD, theyre silent, and super fast, only downside is the price per GB.

HDD noise is more a factor of the brand and model than speed. I've owned noisy 5400s and fairly silent 7200s. These days I've learned to live w/o storing a lot of clutter on the internal drive and only put SSDs inside. Zero noise and ultimate speed. 128GB is more doable than you'd believe if you keep the pics and videos to minimum and mostly on an ext.

So for now i guess I'll go with the 7200 from Apple. If it's quiet great, if not I'll swap it and use it as an external.
