Here's a little graphic to illustrate the inability of my 3G iPhones to acquire and lock onto a 3G signal in my location, Glasgow west end. The base station map is from Sitefinder and I am surrounded by six nearby O2 3G base stations, (three of which are just over 500 metres distant) and are marked as red triangles on the map.

Inside my house I can not get a 3G signal lock on my iPhone (week 29) however a beat up old Nokia gets a healthy 4-5 bars everywhere.

Walking around outside the iPhone will eventually "see" an O2 3G signal in the network selection preferences but will frequently be unable to lock onto it defaulting back yet again to 2G. Needless to say the Nokia always grabs onto the 3G indoors or out.

O2's coverage maps indicate a high quality 3G and HSDPA coverage but three different iPhones tested always default to 2G.
