First I'll say up front that having louder system sounds (new mail, new sms, phone ring, etc) requires a jailbreak. How to add custom sounds using winterboard is documented here (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/548310/) but that's not the point of this post.

What I'm wondering is why Apple provided such low volume system sounds. It is easy to turn down the volume...a bigger problem is not being able to turn the volume up loud enough.

I grabbed some .wav files I liked, increased the gain and imported into iTunes. Now my systems sounds can be REALLY loud. In fact I have turned the sounds down to about the 25% mark. I even considered "editing" them again with less gain because they are almost too loud.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it would seem to point to the speaker not being the problem or incapable of delivering adequate volume. Apple just provided "lower level" sounds for some reason...maybe a good reason.

One final note on the whole jailbreak thing. I had a 1st gen iPhone and purchased a 3G on launch day. Until a couple weeks ago a never considered jailbreaking my phone out of fear of bricking. But after some research it clearly looked like the process has moved out of the "hackers realm" and is a pretty well oiled and documented process so I bit the bullet. (Plus restoring to "factory conditions" is easy except in the most rare of cases). Now I could never go back since I have soooo much control over my phone. Not for everyone, but it's really nice to have the ability to do very simple things like adding a simple theme and/or changing the system sounds. BTW, I have the 'ringtone' used in the iPhone commercials.

Another thing or two I wish Apple would have given us.

Love the phone as is, but love it even more now my systems sounds are easily heard. :D
