I noticed that my AppleWorks update came from wsidecar.apple.com. They also use these subdomains:
  • info.apple.com (support)
  • developer.apple.com (development)
  • store.apple.com (the online Apple Store)
and some subdomains that redirect:
  • ipod.apple.com -> www.apple.com/ipod (iPods)
  • quicktime.apple.com -> www.apple.com/quicktime (QuickTime)
and plenty that don't exist:
  • download.apple.com
  • itunes.apple.com
  • macosx.apple.com
  • support.apple.com
Who knows others? Let's make a list!

I may be all by myself with this new hobby (so far), but I'm still having fun!
  • apple.apple.com -> www.apple.com
  • asw.apple.com ("Apple Sales Web")
  • guide.apple.com and macsoftware.apple.com (Macintosh Product Guide)
  • hotdeals.apple.com (hot deals)
  • jobs.apple.com (employment -- no, not Steve Jobs' personal subdomain!)
  • macos.apple.com -> www.apple.com/macosx (Mac OS X)
  • retail.apple.com ("Apple Retail Web")
  • sales.apple.com -> asw.apple.com
  • train.apple.com and training.apple.com (training)
Here's a mystery. I tried test.apple.com and it changed the URL to something else, and then changed back. It was too fast for me to see, and now it won't do it again - I just get "server not found". Did I imagine it?

This works only with the www sub-subdomain at the front:
  • www.asia.apple.com
Two subdomains that resolve (i.e., the subdomains are defined) but get no response from a server (i.e., the subdomains are not in use):
  • euro.apple.com
  • search.apple.com
This subdomain resolves to a Windows NT Workstation with no home page defined!!
  • brazil.apple.com

You obvious have way too much time to waste. Either that, or you're trying to do some back door hack. Wait a minute, what's the point of this thread again?

The point of the thread? Just natural curiosity ("meow"). And, who knows, we might learn something about Apple that we didn't know before.

In fact, we did learn something already: Apple seems to have a rogue server in Brazil that should be replaced or updated.

So my challenge stands: who can find some more of the Apple subdomain names?

Not really a subdomain, but imac.com goes to apples main page. I noticed that in the URL it actually stays "imac.com", it doesn't re-direct to "apple.com"

Some more:

ali.apple.com (apple learning interchange)
lists.apple.com (mailing lists)
macsoftware.apple.com
This one is interesting...
quickdraw3D.apple.com
certifications.apple.com

I was out of ideas for more, so I slept on it. In the morning, I was back on the hunt!
  • applejava.apple.com -> www.apple.com/java (but no java.apple.com)
  • applescript.apple.com -> www.apple.com/applescript
  • appleshareip.apple.com -> www.apple.com/appleshareip (but no appleshare.apple.com)
  • clarisworks.apple.com -> www.apple.com/appleworks (but no appleworks.apple.com)
  • consultants.apple.com (consulting services)
  • education.apple.com -> www.apple.com/education
  • firewire.apple.com -> www.apple.com/firewire
  • learning.apple.com (customer training)
  • powerbook.apple.com -> www.apple.com/powerbook (but no powermac.apple.com or ibook.apple.com or imac.apple.com)
  • seminars.apple.com (seminar schedule)
  • webobjects.apple.com -> www.apple.com/webobjects
Double-forwards:
  • colorsync.apple.com -> www.apple.com/colorsync -> www.apple.com/macosx/features/colorsync
  • hypercard.apple.com -> www.apple.com/hypercard -> Hypercard page in the Apple Store
  • servers.apple.com -> www.apple.com/powermac/server -> www.apple.com/xserve
  • software.apple.com -> www.apple.com/products -> Apple Store main page (but no hardware.apple.com so I guess they really are a software company!)
  • speech.apple.com -> www.apple.com/macos/speech -> www.apple.com/macosx/features/speech
These ones:
  • campus.apple.com
  • imaging.apple.com
  • leads.apple.com
  • media.apple.com
  • reseller.apple.com
  • smallbusiness.apple.com
  • quicktimevr.apple.com
  • usb.apple.com

and have broken links at the bottom of the page since they point to pages under the same subdomains. Note the misspelling of the word inconvenience.
