Well, after 8 long days of waiting, it will arrive tomorrow
If you could go back in time, and you were me, what would you do when you get it??

Nb:
  • I have bought a new N series wireless router to connect to my Apple TV
  • I have backed up all data on my PC onto an external drive, ready
  • I have called in sick for the day already :)

Normally I never call in sick, but I think that was a great strategic move. Unpack your shiny new Apple and set it up (taking a few pictures).

I would load some of your favorite vacation & family photos and just enjoy how great they look on the LCD screen.

Then you may want to install some programs like VLC, iStat and that sort of thing.

Enjoy.

That's a good tip :D

First thing you should do is install OSX updates and if you have an extra drive run Time Machine to backup your fresh Mac hard drive. Within first two weeks of having my first Mac I screwed up with permissions settings (which is very easy to do) and had to reinstall OS. That thought me a lesson to use a Time Machine.

I would say the first thing to do is hit the power button to turn it on.:D

1. Set up user accounts the way you want them it multiple people will be using them.
2. Set up system preferences the way you want them- where you want your dock, mouse preferences, etc. Things got so much more enjoyable once I got my mouse preferences set up it's not even funny.
3. Set up Time Machine.
4. Install updates.
5. Learn keyboard shortcuts.

Sorry- couldn't stick to three!

Thanks someone
Cool, Ah I cant wait now

I will do the updates and look at two profiles - one for me, and one for the wife, hopefully it's easy

Whats a dock?

The bar at the bottom, or side if you prefer, of the screen that holds buttons for applications, folders, etc.

The dock is the bar that holds your application icons, usually found on the bottom of the screen.
And I would have three or four accounts: one for you, one for your wife, one (only one) with Admin privileges, and one that you only use for testing if/when other accounts go haywire, call it Troubleshooting for example.

Get used to it, mabie open a few things see what is on there. Get familiar

And i recommend a Software called

Onyx, It keeps everything in order, registry and disk optimization.

Run it every now and then to keep the mac tidy.

If you want to use the Mighty Mouse that will come with your IMac you may want to turn Right Click on ( comes as off by default). Click on the Apple in the top left corner of the screen and select System Preferences / Keyboard/Mouse and turn Right click on,, System Preferences is kind of like the Control Panel on a PC.
Or you can do what I did and put the Mighty Mouse back in the package it came in and drop in a drawer and us a PC mouse. :)

Thanks again
I will check out that program, I want a smooth running machine unlike my PC I am getting rid of, so that sounds good

I thought the mighty mouse right clicked as a standard? I got the wireless one.

Just found out my iMac wont arrive today, aghhhh - 10 days waiting now!

What, are you kidding?? Thanks for the heads up
Omg, what am I going to do? No right mouse, its things like this they dont tell you when you buy it.

Geez!

Here's my #1 suggestion -- ENJOY IT!!!

Far, far too many people spend their first minutes and hours of ownership desperately looking for something to be wrong with it. Screen. Fan. Temperature. Mouse. Whatever. For heaven's sake, don't obsess about it -- just enjoy it!!! :apple:

Not sure what that person was thinking, but mighty mouse absolute does have right click. You just need to turn it on in system preferences.

Apple -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse, find your mouse on the tab on top, and enable secondary mouse click.

System preferences is your friend.

Most definitely has right click.
