The 4.0.1 update is 579.3 MB for my iPhone 4... That's a gigantic software update for just changing the display of the the bars for the reception, don't you think? Isn't the 4.0 software only like 350~400MB itself? Weird?

The entire OS gets redownloaded and reapplied. The iPhone4's OS is bigger than the 3GS/3G 4.0 OS.

No.

iOS 4.0 for iPhone is the same size.

Apple doesn't issue patches, they just issue a complete new OS.

Well I know you re-download the whole OS each time (which is kinda ridiculous, but oh well). But almost 600MB still seems huge...

Since the iPhone 4 came with iOS 4 installed, most people probably don't realize that iOS 4 for the iPhone 4 is larger than iOS 4 for the 3G or 3GS.

Exactly. I figured it might be some bit bigger, but that's quite a jump..

Yeah taking like 10 mins to download...this is silly. I should have probably not updated.....dang it

Its the same size it was before.
Did you expect them to make 4.0.1 smaller than 4.0?

Where were you able to find the size of the 4.0 software for the iPhone 4? Because I certainly haven't seen it anywhere. I just know the size of the software for the 3GS which is significantly smaller..

Edit: I just realized I shoulda quoted and replied to all 3 of you in one post.. Sorry about that. >.<

Yes, they're both 579mb for 4.0 and 4.0.1 for iPhone 4 models.

If you restored an iPhone 4 in iTunes before this update came out, iTunes would have downloaded the 4.0 software at that size.

Only once has Apple ever released a patch update for the iPhone, one of the 1.x updates was available both as a full download and as a small patch update of less than 10MB I think. I don't recall which specific version it was.

Only Apple fans would complain about something that takes up .5% of the screen being "ugly". Especially when they are just rectangles.

Yup, but on top of all the other great reasons to own a Mac or an iPhone, aesthetics do help. My first comment to a friend that updated to 4.01 and posted a pic on twitter was "Wow! That is hideous!" I'm not updating b/c I don't need my signal bars to be all that accurate and I don't want to chance screwing up a future jailbreak for the iPhone 4 when it finally gets released.

Does this update anything other than the signal bar display? If not, I won't bother. I already only use the -dB display. That was never inaccurate.
