What's with the 'Wirelessly Posted'?

When people post on an iPhone OS device, their post has a header which says:

"Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)"

Why is this; being that new iPhone OS IDs for new firmwares may not be as important as say, someone posting from Snow Leopard?
 
Actually that is not fully correct. They are posting from mobile.macrumors.com's forum link https://forums.macrumors.com/wap/ .

You can access that with anything (including a laptop). I often hit it with my iPod Touch because the pages load faster depending how badly I need to get a quick reply in :) .

Yup, it shows up when someone posts from the mobile site.

Why do some iPhone's say this? I post her often from my iPhone and it never says that. I'm guessing those are jail broke?

It is really designed for mobile phones that don't have a rich browser. I hope that at some point vBulletin comes out with a mobile option for iPhones. Versus using the iPhone friendly theme...

EDIT: OK so why does it say Tomato's Kaiser Phone? That was the name of an old WM5 phone that I last used 6 months ago. I saw someone above's post also said 'ooh cookies' in the description :)

Testing. Now posting from Firefox in Windows XP SP3 in Fusion on my macbook.

Tried to post from IE but it wouldn't let me access the mobile forums - kept redirecting me to the normal forums.

I'm done for now. Hope that was useful.

Nope, that's handled internally through WiForums. The only way to avoid it is to post via the regular site.

You can also go in and edit your post (again, from the regular site) and remove the "Wirelessly Posted" text.

This is what it looks like from a base MBP 13" April 2010 with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 Im using Safari 5.0
 
I see this thread is back to life. I also would like the 'wirelessly posted' stuff removed. 3 reasons:

- More posts are being made via mobile devices. Autoadding this info is cluttering up our posts with irrelevant technical info.

- The poster didn't ask for it to be added, and is not informed that it will be added

- Most serious - it potentially reveals personal information about the poster without warning. I had my phone named with my real name (in case I lost it) and I was shocked to see above my first wireless post "Wirelessly posted (xxxx xxxx's Kaiser phone: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; ..." I had to go back and edit it and remove my real name from my phone's label.
