Black stain on new unibody MBP !! Not a dent/scratch, but can't get it off

My machine's a week old, taken care of like it's my own baby.
Always in a neoprene sleeve (incase) etc ...

Today I noticed these 2 black stains on the top of the casing. Can't get them off there.
When I touch the surface (with my finger or even scratch it gently with my fingernail) there is no difference in texture and I can't seem to get it off there by cleaning ... Is this a stain under the final layer of finish?


Anyone experienced anything similar?
I'll call Applecare first thing in the morning and demand to get it fixed.
I didn't pay 2500€ for a machine to start showing random black stains on the casing after over-protective usage.

Looks like your Mac had a run-in with a black sharpie. Good luck with getting Apple to repair/replace it.

Are you sure? I'm almost positive that couldn't have been the case, but it sure looks like it ...

You think there's any way of getting this stain off then?

Update: I'm even more sure now that this is not sharpie / permanent marker.
I tried every method of removing permanent marker off any surface and they all don't work.

I even got my MBP in the mail with the same kind of stain near the latch on the side of the machine ... it's a bit more greyish than the ones on the top, but I'm quite sure it's the same kind of stain.


Any thoughts?

Call me obsessive, but I'm really going crazy over this.

Try a magic eraser maybe if it's really some sort of stain and not a burn etc.

My cat used to crawl ontop of mine and leave god knows what that i thought were perm stains or scratches.. and it rubbed right off

I know isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) will remove permanent marker, but I'm not sure how safe it is on the anodized coating. You could give it a shot though. I'm not positive about the where the easiest place to get it is, but I know they include small bottles of it with the circuit board etching kits at RadioShack.

isopropyl alcohol will be fine on your MacBook. Be careful to avoid any caustic cleaners on anodizing, that kind of thing will certainly damage the finish. My suggestion would be to test anything in an inconspicuous area first!

Isopropanol (or 2-propanol) is rubbing alcohol. It should be about a buck for 250 ml at your drugstore.

Aluminum oxidizes a dark gray color. Could the anodization have work off possibly?

I think that's much too dark to be oxidation.

Take it to a skin specialist and have them laser the blemish off.
