iPod 5g iPod upgrade take forever?

Ok the first time it was updating it went for like 3-4 hours..then i disconnected it after on the ipod it had nothing but main menu. I restarted iTunes and inserted my 5g and it started installing the 1.2 again and i saw on my screen the update back, then the apple symbol, now its at do not disconnect and its updating ipod..and its doing this for like 1-2 hours..i have about 32gigs on my 60 gig ipod..is it taking out all the spaces on each song or what?
