5k iMac P3 - disconnecting USB CF reader caused Thunderbay to lose connection...

So I have the OWC Thunderbay hooked up via Thunderbolt 2 and a dedicated CF reader (Lexar) on USB 3.

I disconnected the USB card reader last night to attach my Xrite calibrator and received a warning from SoftRAID that my Thunderbay was disconnected improperly. I did not touch the Thunderbolt cable.

I freaked out a bit and was thankful nothing was writing to the drive at the time. Ran an overnight validation and everything is okay.

Any thoughts on why this might happen?

The latest El Cap has some funny things going on for as few of us with USB. May be related if your on 10.11.1 or higher. Or might be just a one time system glitch unless it keeps happening.
