Hi,
so here I am with my month old 5k imac. Screen is perfect (no backlight bleed and since i do not game at all OR encode videos all day i can live with the thermals of the machine.
I have also read about fans that rattle a little (sound a bit of center) and mine does this too when at 1200 - but i can live with that and its not what my post is about.
This ist about a chirping sound the PSU makes when the imac is idling - doing nothing heavy CPU or GPU wise. THE CHIRPING STOPS whenever i stress one of the two. Whenever more power is drawn from the PSU. Encoding stops it, as well as scrolling up and down any website or watching HD Video.
I'm no technician but i know a power supply can chirp at times. I have a CD Player with a Power Supply that produces a high pitched sound only during standby...
I have made a recording.
Please listen to it and tell me if this is normal OR if your 5k imac does this too. I used a sensitive Mic and it sounds MUCH louder than it really is. You can hear it stop and start. I triggered it by scrolling a website.
I'm quite sensitive to high pitched sound an this Chirping only bothers me when I am reading or writing at my mac at night with no other sound source around me. It's the high pitch that is most annoying. I guess some people would not even notice it.
It comes from the low left side of the machine through the vents that take in the air. The area left of the apple logo is where it comes from. I have hung a little clothe down that area that prevents me from hearing it. I could live with it. But I could also get it fixed if it is not normal behaviour.
Thanks in advance!
