I've read that if you hold the volume down button for a second, the camera will auto focus (easier than trying to tap the actual screen to focus). However, when I hold the volume down button for a second, it just goes into burst mode.

What's the right technique to leverage the volume buttons to autofocus?

The phone will autofocus without pressing any buttons!

Even once focused, if you move the phone slightly you'll see it will focus again all by itself. Or if you put your hand in front of the camera you'll see it focus again automatically.

You can lock focus and exposure by tapping and holding your finger on the screen for around 2 seconds

The vol buttons just take the photo, there is no need for an AF button
