I've seen the threads where people say 6 is faster than 8 - but does that only apply to the 8 core?

Also, I'm not doing 3D work, just photoshop with lots of other apps open at the same time, such as opera, mail, itunes, cyberduck, terminal, mamp, textmate, firefox etc

So would I be better getting 8 instead?

(istat usually reports me using around 60/70% of my 3GB)

It would depend on whether you were saturating the memory bandwidth available to you, or the memory quantity.

Triple channel does give much better bandwidth, but in most cases it's overkill. Of course 8GB RAM is also overkill for many people as well.

The short version is that it depends on what you're doing.

So if you're using about 70% of 3Gb most of the time, then I guess you could say you'll use about 35% of 6Gb. Sounds like that would be more than enough overhead to me.
