I was bored, so I ran a few numbers. :D

Assuming the iPhone 4 box has the same dimensions as the previous ones (.145m x .085 m x .07m), 600,000 iPhone 4 boxes would...
  • Be 105 times taller than the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on Earth.
  • Be 9.8 times taller than Mt Everest.
  • Be 7.9 times deeper than the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean.
  • Reach 0.87 times the way to the edge of space.
  • Fill 13.3 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (a semi-standard international shipping unit).
  • Fill 4.25 semi-trailers.

Any other interesting things you want the numbers compared to?

if you start stacking the 600,000 boxes by one box, then two boxes and so on and so on... what color is the train?

Whoa! Nice numbers!
How many iPhone boxes would it take to cover a direct path from the AT&T warehouse to my front door in Manhattan?

if you stack the iphone box from end to end, how close to the moon will it get?

0.023% of the way there.

Edit: in case I did something idiotic, I went 600k * .145m (87km) divided by 384,403km and multiplied by 100 to get the percent.

Are these numbers with the boxes flat or on end?

Sun?

Mars? Venus? (all the planets)
From the Earth to the Sun (1 Astronomical Unit) would be .0581%.
From the Earth to Mars is .159%.

I'll let you figure out the rest. ;)

Another way of looking at it is you'd need 1031710345 iPhone boxes to reach from the Earth to the Sun, which is 1720 times more than what they sold on launch day.

at U.S. retail would cost 1/2 the price it cost to construct Nationals Park in DC in 2008.

that makes no sense. the mariana trench is deeper than the hight of everest.
Correct. Which is why the same number of iPhone boxes is a smaller multiple of the depth of the Mariana Trench than the height of Mt Everest. ;)

A train going north at 100 mph with 200000 iPhones on it leaves at 10AM. A train going south at 200 mph with 400000 iPhones on it leaves at 11:30AM. Given that the distance between the trains is 729561 iPhone-boxes long at 11:49AM...how much longer until I get my iPhone delivered to my door? :D
